Responsible for preparing and processing legal documents such as summonses, subpoenas, complaints, appeals, motions, and pretrial agreements. A Legal Secretary assists attorneys by performing research to identify laws and court decisions relevant to pending cases; collecting information such as employment, medical, and other records; and submitting information from research for attorney review and approval. A person in this position also organizes and maintains law libraries and document and case files and completes various forms, such as accident reports, trial and courtroom requests, and applications for clients. A Legal Secretary is often called upon to attend legal meetings, such as client interviews, hearings, or depositions, and take notes. Other duties may include drafting and typing office correspondence and other documents and mailing, faxing, or arranging for delivery of legal correspondence to clients, witnesses, and court officials. |
