Preparing for the tests:
- Test descriptions and outlines can be viewed by clicking on the name of the test you want to take.
- Sample tests also give you an idea of what the test will consist of. Tests are currently available for only a subset of our most popular tests. These five question tests can be accessed via a link from the description popup window.
- We have also developed numerous certification preparation courses available for our most popular tests. These courses provide a simulation of the actual tests and identify your strengths and weaknesses. The prep courses also tie each question to a published reference, which explains the topic in detail. You can also go to the Test Center, select a test, and view the test outline as a guideline.
- Finally, we recommend that you study independently.
Taking the tests:
- Our online Certification tests generally consist of 40 questions and take 45 minutes to one hour to complete.
- Questions are timed, typically 180 seconds each (although this may vary
based on question difficulty). A warning will flash when less than 30 seconds
remain.
- Questions are multiple choice, with one (and only one) correct answer and four distracters.
- Questions are written by professionals and are designed to measure real-world knowledge used in the workforce and not arcane software features important only to their developer.
- Expect to see sample code, images, and scenarios associated with many of the questions.
- There is no penalty for guessing, so you are encouraged to make educated guesses when you are uncertain.
- Questions are selected from our large question banks, based on how well you are doing. A Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) engine analyzes your responses and selects a question of the appropriate level in a topic that you have not yet exhausted.
- Brainbench tests are designed to measure your performance in the workplace so we encourage you to take them in an environment that resembles your workplace.
- You are welcome to consult reference material during the test, as this is what you would do in a work environment but remember that your time is limited.
- You will find that because our questions rely on problem solving rather than rote memorization, your reference material will rarely have the exact answer.
- You will receive your score immediately following the test. In the score report, you will see the following:
- A score between 1.0 and 5.0, where 5.0 is the highest.
- An announcement of whether you have been certified (score > 2.75) or certified at the master level (score > 4.0).
- A text description of what this score means.
- A percentile score showing how you compare to everyone else who has taken the test
- A summary of your strengths and weaknesses.
After passing the tests:
- Your certification is valid for 3 years. Upon expiration, your certification will be removed from your transcript. You may then take the test again to regain certification.
